We just finished celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. day and talking about how to be a friend to everyone in our classroom. With the beginning of Black History Month I wanted to build on that lesson and help my students tangibly understand that we are all different on the outside but that there is so much more to us all beneath the surface.
I saw an idea for an egg experiment on Pinterest. So I naturally went out and bought eggs to bring to class. M students were initially confused. They asked, "Miss Henderson are you hungry?" They couldn't understand why their teacher had brought a carton of eggs to school.
Before I told them what we were doing with the eggs, I had them draw pictures of what the eggs looked like on the outside. As you can see some drew more accurately than others. We talked about what was the same about the eggs, like they are the same shape and weight. And we talked about what was different about the eggs, like their color.
Next, I had the students guess what was on the inside of the eggs. We discussed if the eggs would be the same or different inside since their color on the outside was different. Once we had talked about what would be on the inside, it was time to experiment.
I found two clear containers at Michael's to use to hold the yolks. Students' eyes were glued on me as I began to crack the eggs. They were eager to see what was actually inside and if each egg would be the same or different. I cracked open the eggs and students were in awe that both eggs were the same o the inside. I told students that we just like the eggs, are all different on the outside. Different colors, different shapes, different sizes, but we are all the same on the inside. Just like the eggs. i asked students questions like, could it be fair to treat one egg differently because it was brown? They said no of course not! And I was able to help them see that even though people are different on the outside we treat them all with kindness.
Later that day we read the book, "The Colors Of Us" by Karen Katz to talk more in depth about how we all have different skin colors. We talked about how we can celebrate our differences and be happy about them.
It was such a great lesson, and my students went home with a tangible and visual representation of what diversity means.
