Hey, teachers! Do you ever have one of those moments in class where the story you're teaching sparks a room full of excitement, laughter, and creativity? I recently had one with Federico and the Wolf, and I knew I had to create something special to make that story come alive for my students—and to make your teaching life a little easier and a lot more fun. Enter: my bilingual story element review packet! 🐺✨
The Backstory:
A few weeks ago, I read Federico and the Wolf to my K4 class, and the kids were hooked. They couldn't get enough of Federico’s brave journey and the playful twist on the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood. One little boy even shouted out, “¡Yo sería tan valiente como Federico!” when we got to the part where he faces the wolf. Moments like that remind me why I love teaching and why storytime can be the heart of our classrooms.
But I wanted to extend that excitement beyond just one read-aloud. I wanted my students to interact with the story, explore its elements, and practice language skills in a hands-on way—while also giving them a chance to express their own creativity in both English and Spanish.
What's Inside the Packet?
I’m thrilled to share what’s in the Federico and the Wolf story element review packet:
Cover Page (in English and Spanish): A colorful cover page that introduces the packet and sets the stage for all the fun.
Character Page (in English and Spanish): A chance for students to dive into the characters' personalities and motivations. I’ll never forget when Luna, the class clown, dramatically pointed to the wolf and whispered, “¡Es el villano!”—you know they’re learning when they start speaking in character!
Setting Page (in English and Spanish): Students will describe and illustrate the story’s setting. One of my students, Mateo, drew a forest so detailed, I swear you could almost hear the rustling of leaves!
Story Sequence Page (in English and Spanish): To help students piece together the order of events. It’s amazing how invested they get in putting the story in the right order. And, yes, sometimes the wolf tries to sneak in before Federico!
Writing Prompts (in English and Spanish):
If I saw the wolf, I would... / Si viera al lobo, yo... – This prompt gets them thinking outside the box. Sofia said, “I would run fast and call Abuelo!” (with a little added drama).
I would bring Abuelo... / Traería a Abuelo... – The storytelling potential here is endless. One of my students wrote, “I would bring Abuelo and a big stick,” which might just be my new favorite line of the week.
Picture and Word Cards (in English and Spanish): These cards can be used for a variety of activities: building sentences, playing memory, or even as prompts for students to retell the story in their own words. Trust me, these cards are a game-changer. When I used them in my writing center, Maria said, “It’s like playing, but we’re learning!” That’s the magic of teaching.
Why This Packet Will Be a Hit in Your Classroom:
Bilingual Benefits: Whether you teach in a bilingual classroom or want to bring more Spanish into your English lessons, this packet helps students build their language skills in both languages.
Hands-On Engagement: Kids learn best when they’re having fun! The writing prompts, card activities, and sequencing work keep them actively involved.
Creativity on Display: Watching students add their unique ideas to the story, whether through drawing, writing, or talking, is priceless. It’s why we teach, right?
Versatile Use: This packet is perfect for small groups, learning centers, or as a solo activity during independent time. And don’t even get me started on how great it is for early finishers!
Storytime Magic:
A quick story—last week, I had a little student named Alex who had always been shy about speaking in class. But when we used the Federico and the Wolf picture and word cards, Alex came alive. He picked up a card, pointed to the wolf, and confidently declared, “El lobo es peligroso, pero Federico es valiente.” It was one of those moments you don’t forget.
So, if you're looking to bring a little extra fun and engagement to your storytime, give this packet a try. Trust me, your students (and you!) will love it.
